Staff Sergeant–Technical Sergeant Professional Development Guide (PDG) Practice Exam

The pivotal role in the initial phases of the War in Afghanistan was played by the Taliban. After the September 11 attacks in 2001, the United States aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda, the terrorist organization responsible for the attacks. However, the Taliban was the ruling government of Afghanistan at the time and had provided a safe haven for al-Qaeda's operations. This made it crucial for the U.S. and its allies to target the Taliban in order to disrupt al-Qaeda's activities.

The focus on the Taliban was a strategic choice, as dismantling their regime was essential to preventing future terrorist threats emanating from Afghanistan. Their control over the country allowed them to harbor and support terrorist organizations, including al-Qaeda, thus making their removal a top priority in the military objectives of the coalition forces. Thus, the Taliban's significance during the initial stages of the War in Afghanistan directly relates to their involvement in providing support and shelter to terrorists, culminating in military action aimed at their overthrow.
